In the ablutionary cubicle of his sanctum, Garon sluiced himself off. Communion with his God had taken a lot out of him and, as it were, put rather a lot on. Not that he minded. That would be unthinkable. If one is to serve the true glory of God then sacrifices have to be made.

The problem was, whatever other attributes it might or might not have had, it was a hungry God, and increasingly so. Garon was feeling a little rushed off his feet.

Garon was in the process of reaching for a loofah, to clean out some particularly difficult-to-reach crevices, when the METATRON spoke: ‗Incoming message from Commander Marl of the Holding Division.‘

Garon frowned. ‗Could you please inform him that I am at present tending to my toilet?‘

There was a pause. Then: ‗Commander Marl of the Holding Division has just uttered several profanities of a blasphemous and irreligious nature,‘ the METATRON said at last. ‗Should these be logged and detailed pending disciplinary action?‘

‗Just log them,‘ said Garon. ‗I‘l go over them at the first available opportunity.‘

‗Commander Marl of the Holding Division still insists that he be al owed to speak.‘

Garon sighed. ‗Oh, very wel . No direct link. Ask him what he wants. You are not required to keep repeating the area where Marl performs his duties, incidental y.‘

Another brief pause. ‗Commander Marl requests that a Penitent be executed for assault upon the person of the church. Medical Auxiliary Whorl.‘

‗Whorl?‘ Garon asked. Whorl was one of the Adjudication personnel in whom Garon took an, as it were, special interest. Whorl, he recal ed, was a man who could not precisely be cal ed a bigot, because that would presume some degree of conscious thought. The man was a vicious little hatemonger, and his hatred of non-humans stemmed more from latent psychosis than any rational statement of position. Garon had personal y placed him in on the nonhuman processing line, because his bigotry communicated itself and added an extra turn of the thumbscrew to the nonhuman miscreants. It was a question of assigning people the duties to which they were suited.

‗A nonhuman has assaulted Medical Auxiliary Whorl?‘ he said.

‗Commander Marl says that it wasn‘t exactly assault. Medical Auxiliary Whorl has been restricted to the Church Infirmary, suffering from profound nervous col apse.‘

‗Ah, yes. I thought it might be something like that.‘ Garon felt a grain of annoyance. He had ful y expected this Whorl creature to crack at some point, but he had rather hoped it would be later rather than sooner. Possibly, someone would have to be punished. ‗And the identification of this nonhuman who so grievously assaulted him?‘

‗BX—2174.45-IV (provisional),‘ said the METATRON. ‗The Penitent who cal s himself the Doctor.‘

The Doctor again, causing trouble again. Garon felt the strange and icy stab of fear he had felt when the man had come back to life. Had he real y thought that the man might be a demon? Had this nonhuman frightened Garon so much? Even though it had been mere hours ago, it was as if that momentary aberration had happened to someone else.
